Rear Axle

While Air Cooled VWs do not have a rear axle in the same configuration that domestic vehicles do, they have a very unique axle design, unlike most other vehicles that have been built.  The VW rear axle is closely related to a riding lawn mover in that it has a Transaxle. 

Transaxles have less moving parts than a standard drive train that would be found in many other vehicles.
