Helpful hints for your VW electrical system

Volkswagen installed on the 1967 12 volt VW's something called "Blinkgeber" (Meaning: Flasher, special thanks to Bosch.de and Google)  but this thing controls your hazard, turn signal, possibly headlights, and brake lights.  When it goes out it wipes out all of you lights and it usually costs around $80 or higher.  When dealing with it, it is best to get the Robert Bentley manual 1966 - 1969. So you are thinking, "I'll just take it off"  RIGHT.  I hope you like doing wiring.  The only way to change it out is to get several spools of colored wire and the manual and spend 3 or 4 days on rewiring.  This is not for the faint of heart.  It is probably one of those thing best left to a repair shop.  Yes, been there, done that, and burned the T-shirt.

When you redo the wiring on your VW, be sure that you follow the color code strictly.  At the same time, make sure that you use only the same color wire that was original.  Doing this will ensure that anyone else that ever works on your VW, that they can find the right wire.  I have seen vehicles with only red wire used.  This creates an impossible situation when trying to find Electrical problems.

Solid electrical connections are very important.  While you can use solderless crimp connectors to connect two wires together, your wiring will be much better if you use a soldering gun, solder and heat shrink instead. The technique of soldering is a skill that needs to be developed before doing any repairs to your wiring.  Information on how to solder is on our Soldering Technique page.
