First: Yes, Virginia, there is a difference between a generator and alternator! 

    The standard generator for VW produces 30 amps of DC power, the regulator is EXTERNAL of the generator, and CAN operate with a dirty stand (but not a good idea).    

    The Alternator produces 65 amp of DC power, the regulator is INTERNAL to the Alternator and will die with corroded or dirty stand (unless grounded to stand or battery).

Second: The alternator installation and removal are on Type 1 beetle and Type 1 bus. 

    Removal and installation on type 3's are the same procedure as one would do on any other vehicle, like a 1977 Chevy Nova.

    Type 2 Bus and Type 4 are VERY different procedures.
