This section describes helpful Engine hints for your Air-Cooled VW

Please notice that the heading of this page is ENGINE and not MOTOR.

An ENGINE is defined as A device that operates cyclically to convert one form of energy into another, notably heat into work.

A MOTOR is defined as A machine that converts electrical energy to mechanical energy. It is activated by ac or dc.  So with that said, what is under the bonnet of your VW that makes that distinct sound as you drive down the road?  AN ENGINE!!!!!

So, you might ask "Why is Detroit called Motor City?"  or  "Why is the engine on a boat that sticks outside of the hull, an outboard motor?"  Both are good questions.  Answer:  The automotive and engineering industry cannot be accused of being consistent!

Dave and I have heard on various TV shows people calling the engine of a vehicle a motor.  This goes through us like fingernails on a chalkboard!  Well that term is only partially correct but also very incorrect.  An example of a motor is your alternator or generator. An example of an engine is the term Internal Combustion Engine or a Steam Engine.  So, please use the two terms right.  It will help you sound like you know what you are talking about.  If in doubt, then check your Repair Manual, it is in there.

Another term is Power Plant.  In the case, Engine and Power plant are interchangeable.
