Helpful hints on dealing with your exhaust.Tuning an exhaust can make or break your engine. Using certain type of exhaust systems will cause more wear and tear on your engine. Other types of exhaust systems can be overly restrictive. For more about this see Types of Exhaust. We will mention briefly the heat exchanger: The reason we include the exchanger is that the exhaust pipe is surrounded by the "heater box". There is an exhaust pipe that passes through the heater element. All 1600s have heat exchangers unless you are using "J-Tubes" then you have no heater at all. Having said that about the exchanger, most common problem is breaking the stud that is going into the head. It is common practice to use a propane torch on the 13mm nut that holds the exhaust to the head via an exhaust gasket. It is usually easier to remove the heat exchanger so that you can remove the muffler. It is prudent to use Anti Seize on the studs and 12mm self locking copper nuts. Yes, Copper nuts will stay on, Dave has been using them since 1985 on TAZ! There really is not much more to say about this other than, Do not get burned!
