How do I buy a VW?

With money!  Actually, Dave and I have seen VW's traded for everything from a $50 computer desk to a Rolls Royce.  Also you can get one by finding one buried in a barn and sometimes the owner will just give it to you. Just recently at a Barrett-Jackson auction, we saw a VW Bus go for $25,000 USD.

How much should I spend?

That depends on where you buy the VW from.  California is the highest by far.  Usually in Northern states, you will find VW's fairly low priced but they have a problem, RUST.  The price also depends on the model you are after and the available numbers.  Beetles are easily found. Buses are fairly easy to find. Thing is a little hard to find but can be found.  Karmann Ghias are getting harder to find everyday.  So, once again you ask "HOW MUCH?"  Forget looking in the NADA price guide of used cars, nothing older than 20 year old vehicles are listed.  But here is a place that can help with valuations and Collector Car Prices  Normally the price is from about $200 to as high as $25,000, depending on condition.  And just realize that all air cooled VW's are now considered by all states as Classics or Antique vehicles.

Why doesn't Volkswagen still build Air Cooled?

Good question.  Maybe you should ask Volkswagen AG or the US highway traffic and safety administration (NHTSA) that question!  They consider your VW as unsafe. Also thank one Ralph Nader for that, while you are at it!  I submit, its not the vehicle, stupid, its the drivers!  If all drivers paid more attention to the road, less accidents, and safer roads.  Just look at the Autobahn! If you look at the way vehicle safety testing is done it make one wonder if any car is safe.  Every vehicle is safe, if driven in a safe and defensive manner.  Yes, your beetle will explode if launched from a catapult at 100 MPH!  But one only has to look at the Ford Crown Victoria, Pinto, and Chevy Vega for real explosive vehicles!  And the Crown Vic is STILL on the road!!!!  Thanks NHTSA, you're really looking out for our safety!

Another reason is that SUPPOSEDLY Air cooled engines are environmentally unhealthy.  The VW will not pass an emissions test.  Why? It is very difficult to keep the emissions level on any air cooled engine (this problem is seen on aircraft, motorcycles, and any and all air-cooled engines.).

Who created the VW Beetle ?

Good Question!  Many people think it was all Adolph Hitler's idea. WRONG!  Dr Ferdinand Porsche was the one that created the first VW Beetle in 1932.  Hitler DID place his support and the money of the German Government behind Porsche to built the Wolfsburg plant in 1937 and continued to fund VW until 1945.  England restarted the plant in 1947. What is the best VW?

Well that depends on your purpose.  A family of four would have a hard time getting into a Karmann Ghia without the use of a plunger, but would fit easily in to a Bus.  Carrying cargo often, BUS or Pickup.  Like the boxy look of the Hummer, without the $80,000 price tag; then Thing is for you. Carrying stuff around can be done by both Type 3 and Type 4 quite well.

What is the Best year model of VW?

In Beetle, is the 1973 model. Reason: No fuel injection, high back seats, carburetor with oil bath air filter, 1600 cc engine, large signal lenses, readily accepts Gene Berg traction bar, fixed mounted bumpers, still uses Generator (pre Aug 73), parts are still readily available, can remove drum and tire as a unit, accessories are virtually unlimited.

In Thing, Dave and I disagree on this.  He likes the look of the 74 and I like the 73.  His reason for liking the 74 is the same reason I prefer the 73 instead: The scoop!  Other than that they are the virtually the same.

In Super Beetle, (Dave hates the super beetle) but if you want the large car ride in a compact vehicle then the Super Beetle is it!  Best years: 1970-1972 still have the flat windshield. CAUTION: Replace universal joints, tie rod ends, steering dampener, McPherson style struts, and be critical of the pitman arm.  As failure in any of these parts will cause wobbling or shimming at 45 MPH.

In Bus,
