Volkswagen MODEL Identification is arranged in the following fashion.  The first three digits are broken down in the order left to right as to type, model, and version.  There are only four types of Volkswagens in the first generation (Air Cooled).  Each type has a possible of only nine types and of each model there are only nine models possible.  Series numbers are designated by body styles. Version or Variant numbers are derived from specific factory body alterations, such as sun roof, right hand drive, king cab and so on. This information is as per extensive research and may be incorrect as to accuracy. These numbers refer to just the kind of VW  and not what is listed in or on the VIN.  VIN or PAN numbers are the numbers that insurance companies and Governments use. VINs only use the first two numbers as in: 117 XXX XXX would be a Type 1, Model 1, year 7 or 1967 VW Beetle  with no extras.
