Here is a list of tools of to work on your VW.  This is not a complete list for overhauling or restoring your VW.    Don't attempt to overhaul your transmission or engine, leave that to a professional automotive technician experienced in repairing Air Cooled VW.  Reason, not every repair shop knows or has the tools, experience or knowledge needed to repair VW.  If in doubt, ask them.  More about auto shops in the Shop page.  You can buy what is called a "mechanics" set of tools from Sears, Snap on, MAC, Cornwell, SK tools.  This list is one in which you will want to buy the highest quality for a good price. But this is still a short list.

• Open end wrenches in the following sizes; 7mm to 25mm

• Offset Box wrenches in the following sizes: 6mm to 25 mm

• Box end wrenches in following sizes; 6 mm to 25 mm

• 3/8 drive Sockets; 6 point spark plug (13/16), 5 mm to 20 mm

• 3/8 drive Extensions; 2 1/2, 6 inch long

• 3/8 drive Ratchet.

• Phillips screwdrivers; #1 with magnetic tip, #2,  #3, # 4 (all sizes)

• Flat head screwdrivers; 1/8, 3/16, 3/8 (all sizes and lengths)

• Insulated pliers with insulated handles.

• 1/2 drive ratchet

• 1/2 drive sockets; 10 mm to 40 mm

• 1/2 drive extensions complete set

• 17mm Hex head wrench

• Tire pressure gauge up to 50 PSI.

• "go no-go" feeler gauge (SAE or Metric is fine)

• Extra quart of Oil, should be carried at all times

• Quart of Brake Fluid

• Haynes or Bentley Manual (a Must Have!)

• Other Special Tools

Below is a list of mechanics tools sets, but none of these sets are low priced.  They will cost from $2500 to $10,000. The list is in no particular order. All of these have a lifetime warranty.

• MATCO tools: no mechanics set available

I did not mention Stanley for a reason.  Stanley tools bought through Wal-Mart cannot be replaced on a single unit.  The only way to replace a broken tool is to bring in the entire set and replace the set. 

All other tool makers with a lifetime warranty will replace the broken tool with a single unit new tool.
