The restoration of any
Air-Cooled VW requires a certain amount of previous knowledge of
several areas.
-
Auto Mechanics.
-
Body Work
-
Paint
-
Metalworking
Now this does not mean that if you do not possess any
or all of the above, that you will not be able to do a full
restoration of a VW, it just means that
the time it will take to complete the project will be much longer.
Most complete restorations can be done in as little as two months (as
long as you already have all of the parts and materials on hand.).
But usually take any where from six months to two years, depending
upon the amount of time you have to work on the restoration.
There is really no guide for doing restorations. Most
muddle through one only to realize that the VW probably should have
went to an Auto Body with experience in restoring air cooled VW.
I have seen "restorations" that were nothing more than
a fresh coat of cheap paint. This is NO restoration.
To do a PROPER
restoration, you should do a "pan-off"
restoration. Pan-off is when you
remove the body from the "frame" or pan. This a a tremendous
amount of work and takes more than a weekend to complete. And
will tie up your driveway or garage for a considerable time.
Time is not the only large investment you will make if
you do the work yourself, but you will have to invest in
LOTS of tools to complete the job.
