Changes to this page are IN PROGRESS

There are times in which your fuel gauge shows a weird reading, like when you have just filled the tank and the gauge is showing only 1/2 tank.  This problem may not be the gauge but your sending unit.  The fuel sending unit is located inside the fuel tank and has a single wire attached to it.

To test if you have a bad sending unit is to remove the tank.  But removing the tank is not as simple as it sounds, just remove the tank, wrong.  Please read the procedure on the Tank Removal page before continuing.

Once the tank is removed, you will have to tap the collar on the top of the tank with a hardened screwdriver or a small blunt chisel.  Be careful when removing the sending unit to not damage the gasket as that you have to reuse it.  If the gasket in cracked in any way, you will need to replace it.
