Both the bus and pickup are notorious for carrying weight of up to 2000 pounds, but due to the ability of carrying the highest weights of any air cooled VW, they are gear reduced at the rear wheels (reduction gear boxes) or internally at the transmission. We towed a 4 ton wrecker with a 1965 "beetle" Bus loaded with 3 engines,2 transmissions and various other parts, without smoking the clutch or raising the front end up. We could get to 35 to 40 mph without any problem. You would be well advised to not exceed 3500 RPM.
