Volkswagen part numbers are arranged in the following fashion.  The first three digits are broken down in the order left to right as to type, model, and version.  The second set of three digits are called the Main Group and are grouped in nine categories as shown below. There are only four types of Volkswagens in the first generation (Air Cooled).  They are Type, Model, Series, and Version numbers.
